Chichicastenango
The town of Chichicastenango, located northwest of Guatemala City, is well known for its indigenous Mayan cultural heritage. Chichicastenango is home to the historically important Santo Tomás Church, as the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Quichés, was discovered here.
The Chichicastenango Market is alive with excitement on Thursdays and Sundays, the traditional market days. It is arguably the biggest market of its kind in Central America and attracts local and foreign sellers and buyers alike. The market is always bursting with color thanks to the various textile products offered to customers. The pieces are often made by hand or using a loom.
